About Freire Charter School Wilmington
Welcome to Freire Wilmington, where we empower our students to build their futures by setting high academic standards and delivering a rigorous college prep education that prepares each and every one of them for the future they choose. Situated in the heart of Wilmington, Freire Wilmington is a unique school that cultivates students’ individuality and personal interests.
Our academic approach goes beyond the surface, encouraging students to think critically and scientifically, communicate with impact, tackle complex texts, and take what they've learned and apply it to real-life situations.
Mission
Freire Wilmington provides a college-preparatory learning experience with a focus on individual freedom, critical thinking, and problem solving in an environment that emphasizes the values of community, teamwork, equity, and commitment to peace.
Welcome
At Freire Wilmington, we prepare students for success in college, career, and life through rigorous academics, meaningful relationships, and personalized supports. Every student is known, challenged, and encouraged to reach their full potential in a community where they feel seen and valued. Students have opportunities to grow beyond the classroom through leadership roles, clubs, internships, AP courses, and dual enrollment, gaining the skills and experiences that prepare them for the future. We believe that strong partnerships with families are essential to student success. Together, we are building on Freire Wilmington’s strong foundation, one rooted in dedicated educators, engaged families, and students whose talent, resilience, and potential inspire us every day.

Courses
Professional Prep
Freire Schools believes that learning is most powerful when students can connect classroom knowledge to real-world experiences. Through Freire Forward, our comprehensive college and career readiness initiative, students explore future pathways through career fairs, industry field trips, dual enrollment, internships, mentorship opportunities, extracurricular programs, and our signature Experienceship Program. As the centerpiece of Freire Forward, the paid, three-week Experienceship places students alongside professionals at leading businesses and nonprofit organizations, where they build workplace skills, receive mentorship, and gain meaningful career exposure. We've partnered with organizations including Futures First Gaming, LYTE, Buccini Pollin Group, and the DE Office of Defense Services. Together, these experiences bring the classroom into the community while helping students build the confidence, skills, and professional networks needed to succeed in college, careers, and beyond.
“It felt good being in a professional environment—like I was where I was supposed to be. I felt important, like I was doing something right for my future and investing in myself while others were also investing in me.” Brandon C.Class of 2026

“The thing I like most about Freire is the extracurricular activities. They range from fun activities to opportunities where you can really put your skills to the test. It helps you to understand what it is that you’re passionate about, while also understanding what you’re the most skillful in and being able to find the harmony between both.” Jonathan C.Class of 2027

Culture
Commitment to Peace
Freire Wilmington is a peaceful community. Our highest priority is making sure that students feel safe and engaged in our classrooms and throughout our building, and that each of us has the tools and skills we need to resolve conflict peacefully. We work together as a community to create a peaceful environment in which every student can focus on themselves and their education and feel safe to take the emotional and personal risks necessary for learning. We view conflict as an opportunity for learning, growth, positive change, and peace as a way of life.

Emotional Supports
Freire Wilmington’s emotional support team provides regular counseling services to students and families in need of therapy.
Peer Mediation
Each year, a select group of Freire students is trained as Peer Mediators, playing a vital role in maintaining our positive school culture. Students and staff can request mediation to resolve conflicts, and every request is reviewed within 24 hours. Guided by trained student mediators, participants work together to find peaceful solutions, strengthen relationships, and build skills for long-term conflict resolution.
