About Freire Charter High School

One of the first charter schools to open in Pennsylvania, Freire High was founded in 1999 as the flagship Freire Schools campus. Our remarkable 13-to-1 student to faculty ratio allows us to provide the focused attention each of our students need to catch up, then surpass expectations. Freire High’s rigorous, creative curriculum and comprehensive academic and emotional supports help our students thrive in high school, in college, and beyond.

Mission

Freire High provides a college-preparatory learning experience with a focus on individual freedom, critical thinking, and problem solving in an environment that emphasizes the values of community, teamwork, equity, and commitment to peace.

At Freire Charter High School, we believe every student has the potential to achieve great things. We challenge students to think critically, take ownership of their learning, and grow into confident, compassionate leaders who are prepared for college, career, and life. Our dedicated educators create a supportive, engaging environment where students feel known, challenged, and inspired to reach their goals. We partner with families every step of the way, building strong relationships rooted in trust, communication, and shared high expectations. Together, we help every student discover their strengths, embrace new opportunities, and build a future they are excited to create.

Professional Prep

Freire Schools believes that learning is most powerful when students can connect classroom knowledge to real-world experiences. Through Freire Forward, our comprehensive college and career readiness initiative, students explore future pathways through career fairs, industry field trips, dual enrollment, internships, mentorship opportunities, extracurricular programs, and our signature Experienceship Program. As the centerpiece of Freire Forward, the paid, three-week Experienceship places students alongside professionals at leading businesses and nonprofit organizations, where they build workplace skills, receive mentorship, and gain meaningful career exposure. We've partnered with organizations including D'Lauro & Rodgers, Inc., T&M Associates, the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia, and government leaders including State Representative Ben Waxman and Philadelphia City Councilmember Jeffery Young, Jr. Together, these experiences bring the classroom into the community while helping students build the confidence, skills, and professional networks needed to succeed in college, careers, and beyond.

“I would do this experienceship again because it pushed me out of my comfort zone, I connected with people I would have never met and I became more open minded in career fields I haven’t considered before.” A’yana HollowayFreire High School Class of 2024, Penn State Class of 2028

Commitment to Peace

Freire Charter High School is a peaceful community. Our highest priority is making sure that students feel safe and engaged in our classrooms and throughout our building, and that each of us has the tools and skills we need to resolve conflict peacefully. We work together as a community to create a peaceful environment in which every student can focus on themselves and their education and feel safe to take the emotional and personal risks necessary for learning. We view conflict as an opportunity for learning, growth, positive change, and peace as a way of life.

Emotional Supports

Freire High’s emotional support team provides regular counseling services to students and families in need of therapy. In addition to our in-house licensed professional, Freire partners with local graduate programs in counseling psychology to provide a team of graduate students studying the science of emotional support who work with Freire students under the close direction of the Director of Emotional Support Services.

Request Support

Peer Mediation

Each year, a select group of Freire students is trained as Peer Mediators, playing a vital role in maintaining our positive school culture. Students and staff can request mediation to resolve conflicts, and every request is reviewed within 24 hours. Guided by trained student mediators, participants work together to find peaceful solutions, strengthen relationships, and build skills for long-term conflict resolution.
